Teach online!

Some of you may be wondering, how is it that I fund my travels, where does the money come from?
Well, in this lovely digital age, I do just that.
I teach English as a foreign language on an online platform, through Skype and similar software applications.
So yeah, that's it.

I started almost two years ago after I had completed my TEFL certification. TEFL itself wasn't too difficult to complete, it took me an only a couple of months to finish off my 180-hour certificate, and that was working full time as a chef.

I had no idea about online teaching until it was mentioned by my partner. Even then, I thought of it as something unachievable.
That is until I sat down and started to do my own research. After landing a couple of interviews I started to feel more confident in my abilities as a teacher, and maybe I could even make this work.

The first couple of months were..difficult to say the least. The companies that I did manage to get hired in, either paid very little ( and I mean very little) or had a poor booking rate.
I finally managed to land a job in a company that had very high booking rates but very low pay. For a start it was better than nothing, we have all got the being somewhere.
Also, working full time and teaching proved to be harder then I thought.
Those few hours that I had set aside in the evening after work, proved to be difficult to give up for teaching. I found myself to be tired, and my previous living conditions weren't the best for a teaching environment as I shared my house with 2 others and my room with my partner.

Yet finally when we decided to make the leap and start to travel, I was able to switch to teaching full time.
I have found a good company that pays a lot more, and I couldn't be happier with my new working conditions.
Without the interruptions of a full-time job, I can give attention to the 3 things that I like: Teaching, blogging and Yoga.
Life is good.

I have compiled a little list here for you of some pretty good companies, including the one I am currently working with. If I refer you as a tutor, you can get a 20 dollar bonus after you teach your first two classes, yay!

Also, it is good to mention that I currently do not own a college degree, some companies require for you to have one, while others are more relaxed about that.
It's good to have a TEFL certificate though, I will throw down some links for that too.

Uni Prep Institute
This Canada-based online TEFL program is acknowledged internationally and is open to students from around the world, regardless of citizenship and place of residence.

International TEFL Academy
Certifying over 5,500 English educators in over 25 locations around the world and online in 2018 alone, International TEFL Academy is definitely the best at managing TEFL certifications.

Those two are pretty well accredited and known organisations.

Now for the companies,

Palfish:

It's pretty great, all you need is a decent smartphone to run it on and you are set!
You'll be teaching mostly China-based students. I like that you can set your own rates, and if you're fond of live streams, it's a great tool there used to advertise yourself.
No degree required.

VIPKID

If you are America-based and hold some sort of a degree, then look no further, this is perfect for you! They offer great rates and you are free to create your own schedule.
If I held a degree and was born in the states, I would most definitely apply.

ABC360

Other than having a cool company name, they also don't require you to hold a degree, and as long as your accent is clear and almost a native level, they would love to have you.
They have decent rates and you'll be mainly teaching Chinese children.

And finally, the company that I am currently working for,

Acadsoc

It is an advanced online education platform used for providing English lessons to Chinese students. You would have the choice of teaching adults or children, I went for children as I find our classes to be very fun and time passes by so quickly!
Each class lasts 25 minutes and your pay rate depends on how well you do in your interview and demo class. So you could be earning up to 15USD an hour if they really like you!

Let me know if you'd like a referral down below in the comments, and I will also provide you with some good tips to make a good impression and help you to get successfully hired!

Happy Teaching! 😄
